2023年4月15日（土）、オックスフォード大学ラグビーチーム「グレイハウンズ」を京都大学丸和運輸機関ラグビーフィールドに迎えて、両チームの100周年記念試合を開催した。
試合は熱のこもった接戦となり、試合後のファンクションも盛り上がりをみせた。
Oxford Greyhoundsは、来日中に同じラグビーフィールドを拠点とする関西丸和ロジスティクスとも対戦。フィールド外では、同校のOBでイラクで凶弾に倒れた故奥克彦大使の母校の伊丹高校を表敬訪問し、全校生徒の温かい歓迎を受けた。短いオフには、日英の学生が小グループに分かれて京都観光を楽しみ、国際交流を図った。
Oxford・京都大学両校の学生たちにとってかけがえのない経験となった一週間を、4/15の100周年記念試合を中心に、新聞・テレビの報道、動画・スナップ写真、帰国後のオックスフォード関係者からのメッセージによりレポートする。

【京都大学コメント】

先ずは、今回のオックスフォード大の京都遠征にご尽力いただいた多くのOBの方々、関係者の方々に深く御礼申し上げます。また、新学期や新歓で何かと忙しい中、各種イベントへの同行やいろいろと準備してくれた現役部員のみなさん、お疲れ様でした。
来日翌日に行われた丸和運輸機関さんとのゲームでは時差ボケもあり、よく身体が動かなかったのだろう。本日のゲームは、オックスフォード大の気迫溢れるタックルに縦突進、そして何よりも高い身長と長い手足を活かしたブレイクダウンに苦しめられた。
しかし、課題であったセットプレーも院生、5回生の加入で安定し、何とか勝利することができた。ただ、このゲームで多く取られたペナルティについては、ひとつひとつの分析、改善が必要であろう。主将をはじめ怪我人が多く、まだまだ課題も多いが、新入生を迎え更なる高みを目指して欲しいと思う。
最後に、本当にこのような機会を経験できたことを光栄に思います。また、ラグビーに対する情熱やオンオフの切り替え等、オックスフォード大から多くのものを学べたと思います。
来週からは、少しペースが落ちている新歓にもう一度チカラを入れ、一人でも多くの仲間を
迎え入れられるように頑張りたいと思います。

はじめに、人生に二度とない貴重な機会をいただき、その試合で勝利を収めることができ本当に嬉しく思います。グレイハウンズの皆様、京大関係者の皆様、OBの皆様、本当にありがとうございました。また、来場していていただいた皆様、たくさんのご声援ありがとうございました。
さて今回は、DFの上げ、エリア取りにフォーカスを置きました。
前者については、鋭くアップし、下に刺さる。といったシーンが多く見られ、良い感触を得られたと思います。
後者に関しては、キックを蹴られた際、蹴り返しとカウンターを良いバランスで選択できており、有利な陣地で試合を運べていました。
今後はそれらの精度を上げるとともに、今回目立ったブレイクダウン周りのペナルティを中心に修正していきたいと思います。
新家洋平(2回 鶯谷)SH
後半途中から出ましたが、トライをはじめいくつかのプレーで活躍できて良かったです。伝統あるオックスフォード大学からトライをとったことはかけがえのない経験になりました。ボールを繋いでくれた皆に感謝します。チームとしてもこれまでに比べ一層集中できていて、今後に向けて大事な意味を持つ試合になったはずです。
山口博生(2回 旭丘)SO・FB・WTB
記念すべきオックスフォードとの試合にフルバックとして出場できて嬉しく思います。この試合ではバックスリーで連携してエリアを守ることを特に意識していました。その結果として、キックカウンターでゲインやトライを奪うことができました。今回の試合では違う文化圏のラグビーを体感することができました。これからもこの経験を活かして頑張りたいと思います。
西山恵慈(4回 都立国立)FL
初めての海外大学との試合で期待と興奮、不安をもって試合に臨みました。結果、何本かいいタックルを決めることができ、チームとしても勝つことができて嬉しいです。また、相手のテンポの速い攻撃に苦戦した場面もあり改善点も見つかりました。個人として伸び代だらけなので、まだまだ成長を続けていきたいです。
最後に今回のオックスフォード大学招待ではアフターマッチファンクション含め、素晴らしい経験をすることができました。関係者の方々に感謝の思いでいっぱいです。

まずは、このような素晴らしい機会を実現していただいた事に感謝しています。そして、この歴史的な試合に勝利出来たことを誇りに思います。
個人としては怪我ばかりの3年間を経て、A戦で初めてスタートから80分間出場でき、通用する部分もあった事に成長を実感すると共に、復帰をサポートしてくれた方々に感謝を感じています。
チームとしては、スコアリングゾーンで必ずスコアする、欲を言えばトライを取るという部分にこだわりたいと改めて感じました。
この点を含めて全員で課題を共有して努力すると共に、全員で楽しみたいと思います。

10分弱という短い時間でしたが、オックスフォードとの試合に出場させていただいたことは大変光栄でした。彼らが試合中何を話し合っているのかははっきりとわからないですが、スクラムを組んだりタックルをする中で彼らの勝ちに対する思いや執念を感じ、貴重な経験をさせていただいたと思っています。またアフターマッチファンクション等での交流も、(靴で酒を飲む彼らの文化も含めて)非常に貴重で、楽しい思い出となりました。ご尽力いただいたOBや関係者の皆様、ありがとうございました。

What matters most in rugby is that when players from different countries and cultures get together they have a good, hard games played in a gentlemanly spirit and have high quality social interactions off the field. The tour fulfilled all of those hopes and expectations ? we congratulate the KIURFC team on their victory and we enjoyed getting to know them off the field. 今回のツアーは他に例を見ないほどの成功を収めました。ラグビーで最も重要なことは、試合では国や文化の違うプレイヤーが紳士的なスピリットで良きハードなゲームを行い、試合以外のオフ・ザ・フィールドでは、高い水準の社会的交流を行うことです。このツアーは私たちの願いと期待のすべてを満たしました。京大チームの勝利を祝福します、京大のプレーヤーとの交流を楽しみました。今回のツアーを実現させた皆さんに感謝致します。京都大学ラグビー部のOxford遠征の日を心待ちにし、英国で皆さんの歓待にお応えしたいと思います。

What a time we had enjoying the sights & sounds of Kyoto, which without your efforts this would not have been possible. Two hard fought & eagerly contested rugby matches, post-match functions to savour plus the undoubted highlight being the visit to Itami High School and seeing the joy on the high school students faces both in the classroom and on the pitch, are all memories I will cherish forever. The welcome & hospitality you extended to the entire Oxford University Greyhounds RFC tour party was something to behold, we will strive to ‘step-up’ and match this standard in March/April 2024 or 2025 when you visit Oxford.
I have now been fortunate enough to visit Japan on four occasions, but I can honestly say that this was by far my most memorable visit yet, which was made all the more so by the friendship you extended to me throughout our six day stay in Kyoto - I look forward to revisiting and continuing that friendship in the future.
私たちが京都の光景と音を心から楽しめた時間は、関係者の皆さんの努力がもたらしました。二つの厳しく熱のこもったラグビーの対戦と試合後のファンクション。そして伊丹高校への訪問は今回のツアーのハイライトでした。教室とグランドで見た高校生たちの喜びに満ち溢れた笑顔は一生の思い出です。日本への訪問は今回で4度目ですが、最も印象深いものとなりました。次回京都大学ラグビー部がOxford訪問の際には、双方の友情が将来に続いていくように、十分な準備をしてお待ちしています。

Only 3 members of the Greyhounds touring party had previously visited Japan before this trip and it was a truly marvelous experience for all of us. We enjoyed the tough games and the socialising afterwards. We enjoyed seeing the sights of Kyoto in the company of your club members. It was also an honour for us to visit Itami High School to pay tribute to our revered old boy Ambassador Katsuhiko Oku. We hope to have made memories which will last a lifetime and also lifelong friendships which we can renew when KIURFC visits Oxford ? hopefully in the near future”.

The seed of an idea for the Oxford University Greyhounds to visit Japan and play Kyoto University in March 2022, to celebrate the Centenary of both clubs foundation, began in September 2019 at the Rugby World Cup in Japan. Old friends Reg Clark (OURFC) and Tokihiko Mizuta (KIURFC) shared thoughts over a beer or two and four years later, albeit one year later than originally planned, (thank you COVID) the idea became a reality and a party of 25 touched down at Kansai Airport, Osaka on Tuesday 11th April. Following a traditional Japanese meal that evening, with one or two glasses of sake, the tour party took to their beds for a good night’s sleep, in advance of the first of their two fixtures the following afternoon vs Kansai Maruwa Logistics RFC. A rainy afternoon saw the Greyhounds come off second best (0 – 52) to a well drilled company team, who it transpired had just earned promotion to Division 1 West, the division below the fully professional Japanese team, so a creditable performance from the young student team. Maruwa proved more hospitable at the post-match function, held at the Tokyu Hotel in Kyoto, than they had on the pitch, with a five course banquet followed by numerous speeches and presentations. But perhaps the highlight of the evening, was when the Maruwa social secretary, joined the Greyhounds on stage for their unique version of ‘Twist & Shout’, to which he threw himself in with 100% commitment, if not talent! Following the function, the Greyhounds ‘local knowledge specialist’ Shuya Yoshimura, a current MBA student from Osaka, took the tour party to see the sights and sounds of downtown Kyoto, including the infamous Karaoke Box!
京都遠征ツアー 2023年4月
オックスフォード大学グレイハウンズRFCが来日し、両クラブの創立100周年を記念して2022年3月に京都大学RFCと対戦するというアイデアの種は、2019年9月に日本で開催されたラグビーワールドカップで始まりました。数十年来の旧友であるレジ・クラーク氏（OURFC）と水田時彦氏（KIURFC）がビールを飲みながら思いを語り合いました。それから4年後、コロナの影響で当初の予定より1年遅れたものの、その時のアイデアが実現にすることとなり、25人の遠征チームが4月11日（火）に大阪の関西国際空港に降り立ちました。その晩の伝統的な日本食と日本酒1、2杯の後、遠征チーム一行は、今回の遠征2試合の初戦である翌日の午後からの関西丸和ロジスティクスRFC戦に備え、ぐっすり眠るために早めに床につきました。4月12日（水）午後は雨の降る中、練習をしっかりと積み、チームとしてまとまっていた関西丸和ロジスティクスRFCに、オックスフォード大学グレイハウンズRFCは0対52で敗れました。関西丸和ロジスティクスRFCは日本のプロリーグであるリーグワンの1つ下に当たるトップウエストAリーグに昇格したばかりの強いチームであり、その点では若い学生を中心としたオックスフォード大学グレイハウンズRFCのパフォーマンスは賞賛に値します。試合後、京都の東急ホテルで行われた懇親会では、関西丸和ロジスティクスRFCはピッチ上以上にもてなしをしてくれました。5コースメニューの食事が出された宴会、そして多くのスピーチや贈呈式が行われました。しかし、この夜のハイライトは、丸和の宴会部長が、グレイハウンズのユニークなバージョンである「Twist & Shout」のパフォーマンスに加わり、才能はともかく、100％のコミットメントで歌ってくれたことでしょう！その後、グレイハウンズのメンバーで「地元知識スペシャリスト」である吉村修也氏（大阪大学出身でオックスフォード大学MBA在学中）が、遠征チーム一行を連れて、イギリスにはない日本独特として知られているカラオケボックスを含む京都の繁華街の喧騒を体験させてくれました！

Fortunately for the tourists the next day did not require an early breakfast, as they were met by members of Kyoto University RFC for an afternoon of sightseeing, including the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion), Yasaka Shrine and and the Kiyomizudera Temple, before heading to a wonderful sushi restaurant to refuel. The day finished off with a visit to a local spa, to rejuvenate tired bodies for the second fixture in a little over 36 hours.
Friday saw the tour party board a coach for a highlight of the tour with a visit to Itami High School, the alma mater of the late Ambassador Katsu Oku, the first Japanese national to represent the OURFC Blues XV and the man widely credited with originating the idea that Japan should host the Rugby World Cup. The coach arrived to hundreds of excited flag-waving pupils and the school brass band and after some very moving tributes to Katsu Oku, the players were escorted to the classrooms for extended interaction with the pupils followed by a game of touch rugby with the school teams. The day was topped off by a magnificent kaiseki banquet high on the hills overlooking Osaka bay, hosted by the school’s parents and rugby old boys club – with a match the next afternoon, the players for once abstained from partaking in the free flowing beer & sake, however the one injured player and two management certainly made up for them!
幸運なことに、4月13日（木）は、朝早い朝食を食べる必要はありませんでした。この日は、4つのグループに分かれて京都大学RFCのメンバーと一緒に、それぞれ金閣寺、八坂神社、清水寺などを観光した後、私のグループは美味しいお寿司屋さんで夕食をいただきました。最後は、あと36時間あまりでキックオフとなる次の2試合目に向けて、地元の温泉で疲れた体を癒して1日を終えました。
4月14日（金）は、バスに乗り、今回遠征のハイライトの1つである県立伊丹高校への訪問に向かいました。県立伊丹高校は、日本人で初めてオックスフォード大学RFCの1st XVとしてプレーをした故・奥克彦大使の母校になります。故・奥克彦大使は、ラグビーワールドカップの日本開催の発案に尽力された人です。日本とイギリスの国旗を振りながら出迎えてくれた数百人の生徒と学校のブラスバンドが見守る中、バスは到着しました。故・奥克彦大使への追悼の意を表した記念式典の後、オックスフォード大学グレイハウンズRFCの選手たちは各クラスに案内され、生徒たちと交流しました。その後、伊丹高校ラグビー部の選手とタッチラグビーのゲームを行いました。この日は、大阪湾を見下ろす丘の上の料亭で、伊丹高校校長を始めとする学校の先生方や父兄、伊丹高校ラグビーOBが主催する豪華な会席料理で締めくくられました。翌日の午後には試合があるため、オックスフォード大学グレイハウンズRFCの選手たちは今回ばかりはビールや日本酒などのアルコールを飲みませんでしたが、試合に出られない怪我をしている選手とツアーマネージャー、チームマネージャーがその埋め合わせをしました！
Saturday dawned to heavy skies and persistent rain, but this didn’t dampen the spirts of the tourists or their hosts, as kick-off for the first ever fixture between an Oxford University and a Kyoto University team approached at 2pm. Despite the rain, there was a 10 minute pre-match ceremony, finishing with Reg Clark presenting the match ball – the first such ball to be made from recycled rubber, as played with in the Varsity Matches on March 25th - to the two captains, before play commenced. The Greyhounds received some final words of encouragement from Oxford’s first Japanese Blue and former national captain Toshiyuki Hayashi, who being a former Doshisha University player told the Dogs to ‘bash them’! The next 80 minutes saw a highly competitive fixture, which despite the damp conditions, saw both teams play with tremendous skill, ambition and heart. The final score of 23 points to 15 in favour of the home side, was fair reflection of the game, but the Kyoto players perhaps benefited from not being party to the prior three days hospitality until after the match! Immediately post-match the result was forgotten, and ‘No-Side’ began, with the players joining for photos, followed by speeches and presentations, and the players exchanging ‘stash’ with each other. The official post-match function took place at The Hub, a venue based on the style of a traditional English Pub, in downtown Kyoto, with more speeches, presentations, songs sung and friendships made. As is tradition in Japan, the function ended bang on time, but then Shuya once again came in to his own to ensure the Greyhounds enjoyed a Saturday night on the town to remember - or perhaps not!
4月15日（土）はどんよりとした空模様で雨が降り続きましたが、午後2時にキックオフのオックスフォード大学と京都大学の初対決に向けて、私たち遠征チームとホストである京都大学の意気込みをくじくことはありませんでした。雨の中、試合開始前に10分間のセレモニーが行われ、最後に、レジ・クラーク氏から試合球（3月25日のオックスフォード大学とケンブリッジ大学とのバーシティマッチで使用されたものと同様のもので、世界で初めてリサイクルゴムを使用したラグビーボール）が両キャプテンに手渡されました。その後、オックスフォー大学グレイハウンズのメンバーに、オックスフォード大学RFCの1st XVとして日本人として初めてケンブリッジ大学とのバーシティマッチに出場し、元同志社大学の選手で、日本代表キャプテンを務めたこともある林敏之氏から、「バシバシやってください」と最後の激励がありました。試合開始後のキックオフからの80分間は、湿ったコンディションにもかかわらず、両チームとも素晴らしいスキル、野心、そしてハートを持ったプレーを披露し、非常に拮抗した試合となりました。最終的なスコアは23対15でホームチームの勝利となり、その日の試合を反映したフェアな結果となりました。もしかしたら、京都大学の選手たちは、この日のアフターマッチファンクションまで、グレイハウンズが試合前3日間にわたるようなおもてなしを受けなかったことが功を奏したのかもしれません。試合直後から、試合での敵味方はすぐに忘れ去られ、「ノーサイド」が始まりました。両チームの選手が加わっての記念撮影、その後スピーチ、贈呈式、そして選手同士の「贈り物」の交換が行われました。試合後の公式なアフターマッチファンクションは、京都の繁華街にある伝統的なイングリッシュパブのスタイルをした会場「The Hub」で行われ、さらなるスピーチや贈呈式があり、数々の歌が歌われ、友情がさらに深まりました。日本らしく、アフターマッチファンクションは時間通りに終了しました。が、その後も我がグレイハウンズの吉村修也氏が再び力を発揮してくれ、グレイハウンドのメンバーが忘れられない（もしかしたら忘れたいかもしれませんが）京都の土曜の夜を過ごすこととなりました。

The final day of the tour, saw a rather dishevelled set of players leave the hotel, take the subway across town for a light lunch in a lovely traditional Japanese soba restaurant before heading to Kyoto University to hear an interesting and enlightening speech by our own Reg Clark on ‘The History of Rugby in the UK and Japan, with particular reference to the Histories of Oxford University RFC and Kyoto University RFC.’
During the speech Reg referred to the ancient Japanese/Chinese game of Kemari – a kind of ‘keepy-uppy’ performed in temples on certain occasions. The Chairman of the local society promoting this ancient ritual subsequently gave a very long and detailed exposition of its highly stylised traditions after which it was concluded that the launch of the OU Kemari Society might be postponed for the moment. Following this our hosts took us to a ‘German Bierkeller’ and with the intricacies of Kemari now forgotten the tourists and their hosts intermingled, enjoying good beer and food, followed by more speeches and presentations. Fond farewells were exchanged and a promises made to reciprocate their wonderful hospitality should Kyoto University RFC decide to visit Oxford in the spring of 2024 or 2025.
遠征最終日の4月16日（日）、少し二日酔いの選手たちを含む一行は、ホテルから地下鉄で街中を移動し、伝統的な日本そば屋で軽い昼食をとりました。その後、京都大学に向かい、私たちのツアーマネージャーであるレジ・クラーク氏による「イギリスと日本におけるラグビーの歴史：オックスフォード大学RFCと京都大学RFCの歴史を参考にしながら」という興味深い基調講演を聴きました。
講演の中で、レジ・クラーク氏は、日本や中国に古くから伝わる「蹴鞠（けまり）」という、寺社にて特別な機会に行われる「リフティング」のような儀式について言及しました。この古代の儀式を推進する地元の協会の会長が、その高度に様式化された伝統について長い時間にわたり、詳細に説明してくれました。その後、ホストである京都大学RFCは私たち一行をドイツのビアレストランである「ミュンヘン」に招き、おいしいビールと食事を楽しみながら、更なるスピーチや贈呈式などオックスフォード大学と京都大学の交流を行いました。お互いに愛情のこもった別れの挨拶が交わされ、もし2024年か2025年の春に京都大学RFCがオックスフォードを訪問することになった時には、今回の素晴らしいおもてなしに応えるように迎え入れたいとの約束をしました。
